the songs we sing

a rainy weekend it has been! but a wonderful weekend because we can listen to the rain through open windows... for the past two days they boys have been watching the rain outside the window, making scared faces each time they hear thunder and singing it's raining it's pouring. growing up we used to sing this song all of the time, and i never thought anything of it. but now as an adult i wonder why is this such a great song to sing?

if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring, he went to be and bumped his head, (ok, this is the part i have a hard time with)... and didn't get up in the morning. is there a second verse to this song that i somehow missed years ago? did the poor man die? have a concussion?

while we are on the topic...what about rock-a-bye baby? the bow breaks and the baby falls down....it doesn't sound like a happy ending to me, but for some reason i sing it to elliott every night when i drop him into bed. what other songs should parents think about before singing?

  1. What about 'Ring Around the Rosey'(sp?)? Isn't that something about dancing around a dead dude?

  4. I never really thought about the words to those songs! How depressing! But yet we sing them?

  5. Don't forget Humpty Dumpty. How about Jack and Jill? I found a neat website that has lots of songs in many different categories that explains the history of the song. Check it out at http://bussongs.com/

  6. too funny! I always change the words to rock a bye baby to "and mom with catch Zoe, cradle and all" - this is my parental paranoia coming out in song...
