if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring, he went to be and bumped his head, (ok, this is the part i have a hard time with)... and didn't get up in the morning. is there a second verse to this song that i somehow missed years ago? did the poor man die? have a concussion?
while we are on the topic...what about rock-a-bye baby? the bow breaks and the baby falls down....it doesn't sound like a happy ending to me, but for some reason i sing it to elliott every night when i drop him into bed. what other songs should parents think about before singing?
What about 'Ring Around the Rosey'(sp?)? Isn't that something about dancing around a dead dude?
ReplyDeletekathy...i never knew that...scratch that one off the list

ReplyDeleteI never really thought about the words to those songs! How depressing! But yet we sing them?
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Humpty Dumpty. How about Jack and Jill? I found a neat website that has lots of songs in many different categories that explains the history of the song. Check it out at http://bussongs.com/
ReplyDeletetoo funny! I always change the words to rock a bye baby to "and mom with catch Zoe, cradle and all" - this is my parental paranoia coming out in song...
