Girl's Night. Orange Pebble Studio Style.

Before I had ever heard of The Orange Pebble Studio, I had fallen in love.

I wandered in two Christmases ago and was enamored.

I looked at each item, and my soul seemed to sing.

As I wandered, I touched each piece and took in the stories that each told.

Words upon art were calling my attention as if I were reading them for the first time.

Soar, Dance, Sing, Loved, Twirl, Cherished, Worthy

They were touching a part of my heart that I had long ignored.

I walked out of the studio that Christmas with an ornament that said, Be You.

For some reason it was calling my name, but I had yet to know why.

The following January, the dots began to connect.

I began a journey to my heart to find my true self.  In order to Be You, I needed to find out who that You was.

This journey led me to Kim, the creativity behind The Orange Pebble Studio.

Tonight, Kim graciously hosted us in her studio for one last girl's night before Finley comes home.

Kim's studio is filled with all things creative.

There are no rules.

There are no expectations.

.... just the invitation to create,

to find the beauty in the mistakes.

As the night went on, we found ourselves worrying less and playing more.

...allowing our hands to work, and our hearts to sing.

We made room for grace and found great freedom in letting go.

Thank you, Kim.... for a night that really wasn't about creation, but the creating.

Community is...

I recently heard Shauna Niequist read this passage aloud at an event promoting her new book, Bread & Wine.  As I listened, my eyes filled with tears.  It told my story.  It told our story. It told His story.

.....................

"We don't come to the table to fight or to defend.  We don't come to prove or to conquer, to draw lines in the sand or stir up trouble.  We come to the table because our hunger brings us there.  We come with a need, with fragility, with an admission of our humanity.  The table is the great equalizer, the level playing field many of us have been looking everywhere for.  The table is the place where the doing stops, the trying stops, the masks are removed, and we allow ourselves to be nourished, like children.  We allow someone else to meet our need.  In a world that prides people on not having needs, on going longer and faster, on going without, on powering through, the table is a place of safety and rest and humanity, where we are allowed to be as fragile as we feel.  If the home is a body, the table is the heart, the beating center, the sustainer of life and healthy.

Come to the table."

.....................

Four years ago, Steve and I were optimistic and overjoyed that God had called us to a baby in Korea. We were inspired, wide eyed and could not wait to give a once orphan a home.

Four years ago, Steve and I embarked on this journey independently, not asking for help, and confident that although it was not going to be an easy road, we would be able to manage it relatively unscathed.

Four years later....we have realized just how wrong we were.  We have had to come to the table, with our needs, our fragility, and our admission of humanity.

As we have sat at the table we have realized just what community is.

Community is a cheesecake with candles burning brightly the letters EP, with a small group singing Happy E.P. to you.........

Community is....

ten people sitting around on a Sunday night, listening through tears and praying for our aching hearts, random generous checks appearing in our mailbox, bags full of brand new clothes gifted specifically for Finley, a dear friend showing up with target bags to boot and completing a closet overhaul for Finley girla snow globe left in our car to celebrate a special girl's birthday, friends upon friends gathering around a cake and singing Happy Birthday in hopes that all in Korea could hear, a print sent because it was meant to be in our home, family gathering around Kimchee and eating it in spite of it's tastemessages sent with thoughts and prayers inside, phone calls from afar asking if there is any new news, favorite outfits passed on from a favorite friendhugs when there are no more words, long, in depth searches for korean books, notes on keyboards, twitter and every social media in between, those holding hope when I was pretty sure mine is missing, lovely ladies inviting me over to chat grieve and laugh, a bed made by hand, a Korean video purchased by the boys, Christmas gifts with Finley written atop, passed kleenex, empathetic looks sighs and words, gifts given even though our girl is halfway around the world, fabric shopping, quilt planning and patient understanding, ties upon ties donated for Finley, a dear friend's mom helping me sew for the cause, friends and family sharing Finley's story, a book given to Finley about a girl who can do anything, messages at just the right time, "our" finley spoken by manyremembering of the details of Finley girl knowing her only through pictures and stories, video sent to affirm, songs sent console, neighbors asking if we have heard any moresnow...and a dear friend sharing what the first snow symbolizes in Korea, pins pinned because Finley came to mind, likes on un.tied's pageevery bracelet, key fob and necklace purchased, every time someone speaks of her name and shares her storya hand stitched quilt with a map of Korea made with love, friends joining me in my sorrow and just listeninga friend listening through tears...often,every comment and like as we tell Finely girl's story, "Finley girl," spoken by others, continuous invitations to workout...showing N. Korea whose boss,
the sound of her name..spoken in love.

The most important lesson we have learned through this all is that it is not just Steve and I adopting Finley girl, but that our entire community is adopting her, and one day we well tell her of their love for her.

To our community, Thank You for allowing us to be as fragile as we feel!

"We don't learn to love each other well in the easy moments.  Anyone is good company at a cocktail party.  But love is born when we misunderstand one another and make it right, when we cry in the kitchen, when we show up uninvited with magazines and granola bars, in an effort to say I love you." ~Shauna Niequist

I Will Wait

Time and time again, I begin to write hoping to describe how my heart aches to meet Finley, and time and time again, I simply cannot find a way.

The grief is too great and the pain is too real.

There are simply no words to describe how hard it is,
and I am simply too sad and too tired to craft any.

Today, I still don't have the words, but this song spoke to my aching heart.

{Thank you, Matt for sending this our way tonight!}

I came home

 Like a stone
And I fell heavy into your arms
 These days of dust
 Which we've known
Will blow away with this new sun

And I'll kneel down
 Wait for now
 And I'll kneel down
 Wait for now

And I will wait, I will wait for you. (2x)

So break my step
 And relent
You forgave and I won't forget
 Know what we've seen
 And him with less
 Now in some way
 Shake the excess

And I'll kneel down
 Wait for now
 And I'll kneel down
 Know my ground

And I will wait, I will wait for you. (4x)

Now I'll be bold
 As well as strong
Use my head alongside my heart
 So take my flesh
 And fix my eyes
That tethered mind free from the lies

And I'll kneel down
 Wait for now
 And I'll kneel down
 Know my ground
 And I'll kneel down
 Wait for now

Raise my hands
 Paint my spirit gold
 And bow my head
 Keep my heart slow

And raise my hands
 Paint my spirit gold
 And bow my head
 Keep my heart slow

The road has been long.

I still don't see the end.

But, I will wait.

1/2 Birthday Bike Riding Bonanza

7 and 1/2 years ago, I was checked into the hospital on the
 23rd day of December.

According to my calendar, I was not supposed to see the labor and delivery room for another two weeks.

Apparently, there was another plan that I was not consulted on.

As I sat dismayed and in tears, I asked the nurse if my baby would be born before Christmas.
To which she replied,

I'm not sure.

17 hours later, on Christmas Eve our Gibson Jack was born.

From that day forward, I knew I had a very important job as Gibson's mother.  It was going to be my job to make sure he knew that his birthday was special, that even in the midst of Christmas chaos he would have his own celebration, his own presents {wrapped in birthday paper!!}, and his own special day.

And, up until this seventh year, I would say Gibson never even noticed that he had to share his special day.
He didn't notice until his own friends birthday invitations started to roll in and he asked why he never had a friend party.

With his new awareness, my heart just broke, and in a moment of weakness I told him that he is special because he can have his very own 1/2 birthday party in the summer.

So, that we did....

We invited 14 of Gibson's closest friends,

ordered a special cake in his honor,

fashioned a suitable hanging sign,

tried our hand at making 1/2 drinks,

and set the kids loose on the trails.
{thanks mr. matt and dad for riding along}

When all was said and done, I think it is safe to say that we had one
7 1/2 year old who felt pretty special no matter what
day his birthday falls on.

InstaFriday: B~n~H, Wine Country Edition

A good friend will bail you out of jail....
A best friend will sit beside you and say, "Damn, that was fun."
                                                                                        ~Unknown

Although no jail time was served, side splitting fun was certainly had on our second annual B~n~H couples weekend getaway.

This year's trip took us to Wine Country for tasting, swib, kayaking, haunted mansions, planking and lots of laughter.

Thankful for the time away { thanks mom and dad } and for amazing friends.

The following is a small glimpse into what thirty-somethings do when they get away from their kids for more than one night.  Normal? I'm not quite sure.  Us? Yes. Love us or leave us.

1. Starting our trip with an Oatmeal Stout at Mackinaw Brewing Company.

2. Trying to capture the rainbow after a day of raining.

3. Our first stop. Lesson Learned: Never trust a winery who has their bar on wheels.

4. Dinner stop #1, The Lumberjack in Honor, MI. According Yahoo, it is critically acclaimed receiving 5 out of 6 stars.  Apparently, those ratings were from the locals.

5. Treasures from our favorite stop, 45 North.

6. Why wouldn't you use a wall mounted rhinoceros for a paper towel holder?

7. Ernie gearing up for our Platte River kayaking excursion.

8. That's why we didn't bring the kids, we wouldn't want to put them in such grave danger.         Although, we did not see a bear or a cougar, we did see hundreds of fish!

9. Cross #26 off the list.

10. Steve and I got to see where the legendary ice cream is made, and the cows that made it.  I have to say, they were the happiest looking cows I have ever seen...and I grew up in Coopersville.

11. Chad firing up for a big night in Traverse City.

12. We thirty somethings got crazy and tried our very first 5 hour energy drinks....the results? red cheeks and increased drowsiness...

13. Steve lurking in the haunted elevator of the Jolly Pumpkin, waiting to scare our friends.

14. Wondering what do do while in the haunted Genvieve's bedroom? Why, plank of course.

15. Wrapping up our weekend with a B~n~H huddle, "B~n~H, Wine Country!"

16. Finding one last treasure on the scenic route home....my first ever pastie.

moments like these

one day, i am certain, things will slow down.  there will be a day where dashing from school to soccer practice is no longer my job.  when searching for show n' tell items, that no one else will think of, will long be over.  nights, where the only bedtime stories in our house will be the ones held in our hands, read silently to ourselves.

i have been trained, we have been trained, to always be looking ahead to the next moment.  we rush and rush and rush, always looking for one little something more.  one little something more, to make us happy, satisfied and successful.

and then, nights like tonight happen.  ones that are woven into our lives to remind us of what is important.  as we gathered with our church family, raising the roof in a halloween hootenanny, time stood still.

it was loud. it was crazy. and it was beautiful.  a kind of beautiful that brings tears to your eyes and overflows your heart with gratitude.  as i stood back, in attempt to take it all in, i had an overwhelming feeling of peace, God's presence and a deep understanding that we have been blessed.

on this halloween night, i am thankful.  i am thankful that time stood still.  thankful, that our children get to be a part of something bigger than themselves.  and, thankful, most of all, for moments like these.

small group love

for years steve and i would walk in and out of church without saying more than a hello to people. we craved a church community, prayed for a church community, but didn't actively pursue it, which, by the way doesn't greatly improve your chances.

God answered our prayers last year, when i ran into a familiar face at a teacher's conference. an old college classmate who was gracious enough to ask if we had a small group and invited us into his.

for the past year we have been blessed by this wonderful group of people who have celebrated what is good, trudged through the bad and loved us despite all that is ugly in us.

we are thankful and love every single one of you.
